Service Description

A saggar is a type of kiln furniture. It is a ceramic box container used in the firing of pottery to enclose or protect ware being fired inside a kiln. They can also be used to seal pottery in a reduction atmosphere along with natural or combustible materials that burn away in the kiln leaving their traces on the work being fired. These materials include – seaweed, banana skins, vegetable scraps, copper, tinfoil and oxides, these materials react with each other to create different effects. During week one you will lean how to build and burnish a piece suitable for this type of firing. 3-hour class Week two we will pack the bisque fired pieces into the saggars along with the materials of your choice. The saggars will then be fired to 1000 degrees centigrade in an electric kiln 1-hour class Week three we will open the saggars (the most exciting part of the process as you never quite know how the pieces will turn out) We will then polish them with wax to bring out the shine. 1-hour class This course is suitable for beginners.
